One of the main differences of working on the car, as opposed to an ambulance is that you are always on your own. This isn't normally a problem, but sometimes you do feel just a tiny bit vulnerable.
A case in point would be last night, I was called to a 17 year old who was 8 weeks pregnant, and had taken a tumble down some stairs. This wouldn't normally be a problem job, there is a fairly small chance of there being any actual damage.
The problem was, as I turned up there were around 20 youths hanging around the house, all dressed in the de rigeur baseball hat and hoodie. The house was down a little side turning, so there were no houses overlooking me. It was around 1am, and several of the nearby streetlights weren't working.
To be fair to them, they were no trouble - they had all turned up after being summoned via mobile phone but it did put me a bit on my guard. To get to the patient I had to walk through a miasma of cannabis smoke - I should count myself lucky that we don't have random drug tests, because I'd probably be positive just due to passive smoking.
The TV series Spaced, and then Shaun of the Dead had, as a running theme, the idea that groups of teenagers can be a bit scary, something that until tonight I've never had a problem with.
Other jobs of the night included two separate epileptic fitters, a heavy combative patient who'd had a stroke, a diabetic with an ear infection and a barndoor appendicitis. None of these jobs were particularly stressful (with the exception of getting the stroke patient out from lying behind their bed and downstairs, with them fighting all the way).

Good point about random drug testing, you would have been positive; you may also have become mildly stoned, did you notice? Random drug testing isn't really a good idea for this reason. In this situation I would have been reassured knowing the youths were stoned, rather than drunk or even just being bolshy; I'd rather deal with a large group of stoned baseball capped youths than a group of baseball capped youths, drunk or not. I've never experienced a violent stoner.

I think I've mentioned it a couple of times on this blog that I'd rather the government ban alcohol and legalise cannabis - for the exact same reason you've given, that I've never been assaulted, or had a any trouble from someone who is stoned.

Except when you get a packet of weed mixed up with your flat mates oregano and give the wrong one to the gang of chavs. Then you have trouble and might have to start shooting...
Noooooooooooooo... Re: Re: Re: Re: Scary Teenagers

Lol at that. Of course, such mix ups are still the result of the fact cannabis is banned; why else would one's weed be mixed with oregano? (nice tip btw, done this before?) Also, if said chavs could buy weed from legitimate supplier then such mix ups would not occur, they would be stoned a lot and life would be so much more chilled out. :-D

You ever seen a barn door? Ever noticed how unmistakable they are and how hard they are to miss?

Appendicitis = inflammation of the appendix, potentially life threatening.
Barndoor = A collection of signs and symptoms that make a diagnosis really easy. Re: Re: Re: Scary Teenagers

I could have done with a visit from you when my appendix burst!! It took them a week to faff about and decide what to do with me! By the time they got me in theatre there was nowt but pus and I nearly bloody snuffed it.... GPs, some do a great job, some have no clue at all!!

Have you ever though about having special constables accompany you? Prehaps even specials who have some sort of medical training? A friend of mine was a special and in st. Johns Ambulance. I know he found himself in a couple of rough situations and it was extremely helpfull to produce the badge once or twice.

Assuming you know what situation your walking into first I guess it would be ok, preferable, to have, even, special constables with you for drunks, or even just a large bunch of chavs, but stoners are bound to get a bit nervous; you wouldn't want to spoil their high would you?

Well, the vast majority of our calls are no trouble at all - and when there is a suspicion of there being trouble, then our Control will ask to police to attend as well.
I tend not to bother the police too much, as some 6'5" copper standing in the corridor will only slow me down while I run away from violent people... That and (touch wood) people tend not to want to hit me. Re: Scary Teenagers

It must be the uniform or the fact that you're a bloke that you haven't before found groups of young people a bit scary.
I enjoy your blogs. Thanks. |
