Good news on the kidnapped MSF workers front - they were released on Saturday. If I didn't have things like rent and bills keeping me here I'd love to join MSF.

Why, as a shift worker, I'm fcuked. It's why I get annoyed at obnoxious patients - those of us who work shifts give up our health for the ungrateful swines.

The Danish government seems to be doing something helpful for it's sick shift workers, somehow I can't see the British government paying compensation to our shift-workers. They'd rather spend their money bailing out the banks. Sadly this would not be without precedence.

If you're renting then, aside from other debt, most of your bills should revolve around your home and work obligations. If you work it all out, couldn't you put your stuff in storage (or leave it with your mum or friends) and follow the dream?

My grandmother told me before she died that elderly people rarely regret the things they did do, but always the things they didn't. That, 1984 and Dead Poet's Society changed my life forever.

I nearly died once, and not to go into details, lying on a hospital bed (gurney's an American word I know, but oh-so-suitable, with reference to gurning, as the whole experience under any circs is likely to be grotesquely ugly) in the Whittington's A&E: yes - it WAS the things I hadn't done that I regretted the most.

Namely, at that precise point, since one other possible outcome was lifelong paralysis, becoming a highly paid ~~whore~~ escort lady in my twenties when I still had use of all limbs etc, and thus not only getting plenty of male lustfulness filed away, but also making enough to pay for the lifelong care I might have needed.

And thankfully didn't, in the end - at which point Madame Smoochie's Parlour of Sin became rather better left to delusional daydreams - but daft as it sounds, that fact that I'd rather have done something along those lines than not, told its own truth.

I found the graphic (flash based) thing on this BBC page really helpful in making sense of the recent scare story on women, breast cancer, and booze. As someone who looks forward to her drink or three at the end of a long day 2 or 3 times a week, it helped me put a scare story that was all over the news into perspective (okay, I'd have carried on anyway, my Great Aunt knocked back most of a quarter of whisky a night and lived to be 103 - plus I'm not that keen on living to be 150 yrs old, etc).

Anyway - statistics - valuable, but only with the right analytical tools, and with the breakdown of what they ACTUALLY mean made public at the same time, perhaps?
