A difficult day, handled extremely well by all.
Just as a technical point, the phone networks weren't shut off, but switched to emergency mode. GSM has the capability to switch to this mode where only designated VIP sim cards have priority and capacity is assigned so that they could all use the system simultaneously if needed. Hence why many people in London had a full signal but were unable to make calls.
