It's something you need to tell your relatives, not Tom. If he gets called out he has to do everything possible, or there'd be trouble. He has no choice. It's only because death is such a taboo subject in our culture that what happens when it comes is never discussed. People remain in denial until the end, and often never say goodbye properly. It's very sad.
