Good point, but I'd have said the same thing about the men as well.
I suppose the women (and men) belong to the culture, so I suppose it is easy to consider the people of a culture being a possession of the culture.
That and I suppose that I'm talking about that culture's women (or men) as opposed to women (or men) in general.
Oh...I dunno, I never not done much English at skool.
