According to the last stats I saw, they _are_ safer in the big SUVs -- as long as they hit a small car. Two small cars colliding are safer than two SUVs colliding, though. So the net effect of driving an SUV "for safety" is that you are safer as long as other people don't do the same thing. If they do, everyone is less safe.
A classic case of Prisoners Dilemma, actually...
