If you wash your hands in warmish water rather than cold before hand and keep your hand down for a bit then you don't need to set the lancet on as high a number to get enough blood and I find it also hurts a lot less if you prick slightly to the side of the fleshy bit of the finger tip rather than bang in the middle of it. For what it's worth.
