Actually she was just starting the first stage of labour. I think she had about four contractions before calling the ambulance, and I took less than eight minutes to get there. I'm not daft enough to think that she'd listen to anything I'd say when her cervix is 10cm dilated... But the odd twinge of a contraction (and I saw no contractions while I was there) means that she might listen to me a little.
