Think of the steps he had to go through -- first he had to turn it on, then take the paddles out, then charge the paddles, set the charge, place both on the woman's chest with good contact, then fire them. This isn't a gun accidentally going off. He had to know how to use the machine. If he knew so much about the machine, how could he not know the result?
