Its really interesting that you both think this actually. Its not something I have come across before - but then, I do come from things from the service users side of things very much, and maybe no one has had the guts to say this to my face.
What I normally hear is that its a "oh god, they're self harming and I don't really know what diagnoses to give them, but I really should, so I'll say BPD" kind of cover all diagnoses. Problem is, the MH system requires a diagnoses, so if someone self harms, its easy to just lump them into this category.
And believe me, its not a nice diagnoses to have - you have to fight peoples stigma every single step. Trying to get through NHS Occupational Health with that diagnoses took me 6 months of fighting, even though these same people had been allowing me to work unpaid for them for a long time.
