Exactly - I'll ask if they want a hand first, and if so what they'd like me to do. I tend to have a slightly different approach when I'm not in uniform as I can be a bit scary looming over someone.
But if someone is likely to hurt themselves, then I have to do *something* (and would be a failure of my duty of care *not* to do something) - and again I stumble onto consent and capacity...
