Arabic to most Muslims from outside actual Arabic speaking countries is a bit like Hebrew is for Jews, just something they learn to recite the phrases from the Koran or Torah, although most would be able to pronounce Arabic text it is another matter entirely to translate it. I'm trying to start to learn Arabic, primarily from a written word point of view as one of my interests is calligraphy and historical examples of Arabic script can be very beautiful to read and write, it might also prove useful as Arabic blogging is likely to become a hot issue in the coming years.
