You do what you have to do. If you arrived at a job then sat down and spent a bit of time having a good think about the pros and cons of saving the individual then the death rate would soar. Besides, even if does fade out in intensive care, even if he doesn't regain consciousness you gave his wife the chance to say all the things she wants to tell him and to say goodbye and so you've done something to help someone even if it isn't the person you originally set out to help. Besides, there's a chance he will get through it ok. You really shouldn't beat yourself up over this, what you people do is amazing.
