The Red Cross Fire Victim Support teams often end up looking after pets as well as people,who have lost their homes in fires (and their vehicles are equipped to do so, unlike Toms!) I remember reading about a rescued snake being put in a cat box, (I suppose you would have needed to splint a snake Tom) I also read about them going back the next day to help the family bury the family dog that had died in a house fire :(
