I work in healthcare and know more than you think about these kinds of things.
It is never, ever, acceptable to trick a patient into doing anything. If the patient didn't want to go to hospital, and understood the risks, then this was his choice, and it is absolutely wrong to trick him into doing otherwise.
As a side issue, it's not very likely that someone with a recent history of a hypo is septic, as the stress which septicaemia puts on the body causes a release of steroids which push the blood sugar up.
