Except.... Haven't child birthweights increased over the years due to better motherhood nutrition? Doesn't that lead to more painful childbirth? Does increased pain in childbirth lead to a reduction in mother/child bonding? Maybe even an increase in post-natal depression and other mental health issues? I honestly don't know the answer to these questions (not being a midwife - or, surprisingly enough, not that interested in something that I'm never going to have to go through). Dying is a natural part of life - should that also be done without medication that may speed the ending?
