Community responders in a lot of ruaral areas do a great job. They are not a replecement for a full ambulance crew of course, but can provide reassurance and patient support unitl a crew arrives.
Also most are not only First aid trained, but have important life support skils (as well as a load of other skills).
In most cases it is the pateint that benefits here, as it does not matter to them if it says 'st. john ambulance' or NHS on the person that is coming to their aid.
