I always thought that was a bit of a daft thing to do, and decided that if I ever needed to ship huge amounts of prang around, I'd make sure the top layer of bags actually contained something fairly inocuous but horrible-tasting. Maybe ammonium chloride or similar. Sodium hydroxide would just be nasty.
