Emily, I only brought up the viability angle because the Guardian article Tom linked to was using viability as the basis for its argument. Personally, I've always thought that using viability as a cut-off point is a bad idea. At what age do we really become viable and self-sufficient? I don't make the assumption that the child takes precedence over the mother. Their two fates are balanced against each other, but I don't think that we should kill a child merely because it has an "abnormality" or illness. I had already read the article you cite. And while women may have abortions for the reasons you mention, I have also read stories of women who have brought such children to term, and it gave them great joy and hope. Leo
