Plenty of people suffer all of those things and don't turn to crime. Unfortunately society on both sides of the Atlantic is wallowing in a culture of moral relativism. Not every crime or wrong act can or should be attributed to illness or past events. Some people are just plain rotten. If society expected people to be accountable for their actions and stopped accepting lame excuses, we'd all be a lot better off.
