One thing is that I'll bet you aren't supposed to hug patients, as ridiculous as it is. I've spoken to paediatric nurses who can give no more to a distressed child than a 1 armed hug around the shoulders. For some kids I bet that's all they need to calm them down, but it's disciplinary action if you do.
