To be motivated to learn a programming language I think you really need to have a good reason for doing so and a goal in mind. Maybe it's a personal project to write a little app in C# to manage your DVD collection, or a mash-up in Javascript with Google Maps that allows you to plot how frequently you visit an area of London, or perhaps you could learn PHP and SQL and help out MySociety or contribute to other open source projects. (Don't touch Perl though :)
