in the pre-hospital presentation of your case, you would have definately got a ride on my truck & yes they were right to call 999. Haemoptysis can be life threatening. Amongst my normal questions for gaining history, I would have asked you how much blood have you coughed up? how long have you been coughing it up? what did it look like? was it frothy? That would help me gauge how serious your blood loss was & an idea from where the blood was coming.
Don't forget, pre-hospital we don't have the luxuries of x-rays, blood gases etc so your presentation was worthy of 999
