The standard of nursing doesnt look like its likely to improve either. I'm a student nurse and frankly I wouldnt trust half of my peers to make a cup of tea, let alone care for someone important to me. Although that might just be a numbers thing, there are close to 500 student nurses in my year, there are some really good ones in there too. I'm not sure if the entry requirements are too low, the assignments are too easy or if by the end of your first year of training the cynicism and apathy of our mentors start rubbing off on the more impressionable students.
