Re: How To Blog And Not Lose Your Job
by
Anonymous
I think the problem that most people have is that either they don't have an interesting social life or they lack the writing ability to make it sound interesting. Most people's jobs aren't that interesting too - meeting a sales target or finishing a code module may be a great personal achievement (and I'm not degrading the work, it was probably really hard and actually pretty impressive) but it's hard to make it sound interesting if your readers have not been 'following the story' - and unless you're really bored, you aren't going to have been detailing for the past 5 weeks your gradual development work.
So most blogs that involve work tend to involve ranting and blowing off steam. This is not condusive to keeping ones job.
If you actually have an interesting job (such as yours, for example, which takes you inside the houses and lives of a fair cross section of the british public) then you can probably make your job-blog interesting enough without having to use it as a stress outlet. You succeed on this point. The guy that got booted from Waterstones did not.
If you can write, write about your life. If can write well, you don't need to write about your work - your readership follows writing quality, as long as you can write and be interesting, they'll continue to read. We don't _need_ to hear how much your job sucks - if you don't like it, quit. Internicine politics is a tedious subject to those who aren't in the loop.
So: if you have an interesting job and can write half decently, such as Reynolds or DC from The Copper's Blog (who is pretty damn funny in a dryly cynical sense - again writing quality matters) then you're probably okay.
Otherwise... try to have an interesting life and write about that. Even if it's not _that_ interesting... there are lots of books written about 'ordinary people' that are a compelling read because of the skill of the author. Use this skill, make your life compelling. Don't get fired.
