Well, you start with the gentle tap, and then proceed to whatever you need for responsiveness. Quick sternal rub will do nicely. Ok, I can see where that might be a problem too. Still, a basic CPR course wouldn't be that bad, and would allow at least a tap. With gloves on. Put the OED pads on, that would wake up most folks.
